Telehealth, In-Room, or Outdoors: Choosing How You'd Like to Meet
June 22, 2026
There's no single right way to see a psychologist. Different settings suit different people, different days, and different stages of life — and sometimes the format matters as much as the conversation. Here's a look at the options, so you can choose what feels most comfortable for you.
In the Therapy Room
A dedicated, private space, away from the demands of home, can make it easier to switch off the outside world and focus. For many people the ritual of going somewhere to do this work helps mark it off from everyday life. It's a calm, contained setting — and for some, being in the same room simply feels more connected.
Outdoors, in Nature
Some people find it easier to open up while walking side by side than sitting face to face. Being outdoors can ease self-consciousness, settle the nervous system, and make hard conversations feel less intense. If sitting still in a room feels confronting, or you simply think better on your feet, this can be a gentler way in.
Online, by Secure Video
Telehealth means you can have your session from home, or anywhere private. It removes travel, suits people who are unwell, fatigued, immunocompromised, or juggling a lot, and makes consistent support possible even on the harder days. The research is clear that video sessions can be just as effective as in-person ones for most concerns.
By Phone
If video feels like too much — or you just find it easier to talk without being on screen — a phone session is a perfectly good option. Some people find it's actually easier to speak openly when they're not being looked at.
How to Choose
- On a practical level — consider your energy, your health, travel, and where you can find genuine privacy.
- On a personal level — notice whether you'd feel more at ease in a room, on a walk, or behind a screen.
- You're not locked in — many people mix it up: in-room some weeks, online on the tired ones. The format can flex around your life.
The best setting is simply the one that helps you show up and speak freely. If you're not sure, we're happy to talk it through and start with whatever feels easiest.
